Kitchen Makeovers on a Budget

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Any realtor can tell you that the most important room to home buyers is frequently the kitchen. A beautiful kitchen can add thousands of dollars in value and added livability to any home. Unfortunately for homeowners, a total kitchen remodel can be one of the most expensive home improvement projects to undertake. If your kitchen is looking tired and in need of updating, there are several projects that you can undertake to give your kitchen a face lift without breaking the bank. Here are some ideas:
o Cabinet Refacing: Many older cabinets are perfectly functional, but just unattractive. If this is a good description of your cabinets, consider having them refaced. Cabinet refacing is the process of adhering a new veneer to the visible front of your cabinets, and either refacing or replacing the cabinet doors. Cabinet refacing can make the most dated kitchen look up to date. There are hundreds of different styles that can be incorporated into a cabinet refacing, and there is certain to be a style that matches any decorating taste. Even better, cabinet refacing is significantly cheaper than cabinet replacing, making a great way to stretch your refurbishment budget.
o New Hardware: Think of hardware as jewelry for your cabinets. Sometimes the subtle touch of a change in drawer and cabinet pulls can give a dated kitchen a fresh look. Replacing hardware is simple, and there are literally thousands of different options available, from traditional to sleek and modern. Replacing existing hardware is so simple that most homeowners can do it themselves in an afternoon with only a screwdriver. If your cabinets don’t have hardware, installing new pulls is a great way to give your kitchen character and charm.
o Paint: It is amazing what a coat of paint can do in a kitchen. Old and worn cabinets can take on a new life once they receive a fresh coat of paint in a modern color. Best of all, paint is one of the cheapest ways to update your kitchen cabinets. Consult with a professional when you purchase paint to be sure you are buying a scrubbable type that will hold up well in a kitchen. You might consider hiring a painting professional to remove and spray your cabinets with paint to ensure a very smooth and durable resurfacing.
o Countertops and Backsplash: If your cabinets are fine, but you can’t stand the Formica countertops for one more day, consider replacing your countertops. New Formica is very affordable, and can be cut to order at most home improvement centers. If you are craving granite, sometimes you can find a contractor or fabricator that has a remnant available for a deep discount. Custom tile work can also change the look of your kitchen, either on the countertop or backsplash. Many home improvement centers offer free weekend classes in how to set tile, making this a great project for an adventurous do it yourselfer.
To have the kitchen of your dreams you do not have to have a limitless budget, instead use your creativity and you might find that your dated kitchen has more potential that you ever imagined.

Kitchens and Granite Worktops – Today’s Current Trends

Image : http://www.flickr.com
The latest design magazines show that there seems to be quite a retro feel happening in the kitchen cabinet design world right now with curves making a big come back – curve fronted drawer units, curved ends to peninsulars/islands and an endless choice of curved handles. To get worktops to fit on these new design of cabinets ordinary laminate can be difficult to manufacture to follow the lines of the curves but with granite being solid the worktops can be cut to match these quite easily and they will literally follow the contours of the kitchen.
The retro theme is then continued into colours and textures, gloss fronted cabinets teamed up with very strong dark grained woods. Lots of rich, warm woods are now available such as Walnut, Zebrano, or Cherry – the twist being that the grain on these is horizontal giving it the on trend retro feel. Also mix & match dark and light, using woods with high gloss white doors. It is perhaps not practical to have dark wood throughout your kitchen unless the room is very light & spacious but even in a big kitchen it is best to keep the walls & floor a light colour and match in lighter worktops. Darker woods can be beautifully contrasted against with really light worktops like Kashmir White granite. On the other end of the scale a smaller kitchen is good with light reflecting white gloss doors and contrast them with a Tan Brown granite worktop which will add warmth & texture.
To make a bold contemporary statement then choosing a strong coloured kitchen door in say red, black or aubergine will do the trick and they look fabulous with steel appliances. Definitely a look that goes well in a loft apartment or large open plan living area. A smaller space would benefit by mixing in some white high gloss doors to add light.
There are a few things to consider when choosing granite worktops to go with these modern/retro kitchens:
Nero Assoluto (plain black granite) worktops look great in the magazines but in reality they can be hard to look after on a daily basis as they are much more likely to show up any dust, finger prints or smears. A better choice is to opt for a black which is slightly mottled like Black Pearl or one that has a sparkle such as Black Galaxy.
Kashmir White is a great choice if you are having really dark cabinets as it creates a fabulous contrast with the small dak reddish brown spots blending the look well, especially with burgundy tone kitchens and warm woods like cherry.
Light granites will need to be resealed on a more regular basis as the spilt remains of say a curry could possibly stain them. If this is a worry then it could be a better chocie to go with a mid tone granite such as steel grey, which will also compliment your stainless steel appliances.
If there is a lot of white in your kitchen you might want to create a contrast with some of the brown granites (which are also very easy to maintain on a day to day basis) to add some warmth.
If your kitchen worktops are likely to need a lot of joins then it is best to avoid any granites made up from a markedly striated pattern as this may make the joins more noticeable.
So as “natural” seems to be the buzz word when it comes to interior design right now, especially with the huge choice of natural wood doors, granite is a practical and very stylish choice for your worktops.

Kitchen Renovation Tips

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In terms of usage and wear and tear, the kitchen stands out as the first part of your home that easily gets worn down. And this comes as no surprise as this is the area where meals are prepared, and for the most part, parents and their kids get to converse and bond during breakfast and at times during dinner. The kitchen stands at the heart of the home and as it goes, it is the first place that needs renovation.
What normally need to be replaced are the kitchen door knobs which do wear out from all the movements in and out of that area. Replacing kitchen door knobs is relatively inexpensive to do as compared with having a whole kitchen renovation but normally, these door knobs are replaced when a renovation is done. Here are some other tips that may be useful when planning to do a renovation:
- Work with a budget. If you have no idea on how much it will cost to do a renovation then call a subcontractor and ask him to make an estimate. Have him make the estimate based on a total renovation, a renovation wherein he supplies the labor aspect, a partial renovation with the kitchen appliances being replaced, and one estimate without the replacement of the kitchen appliances. From there you can get an idea on how much it will cost. You can also double check the cost of appliances and kitchen cabinets and kitchen modular furniture on the internet as there are numerous websites that can give you the retail prices of these things. You may even get a discount if you buy most of the things from their store.
- Work on a timetable. Often, the best time to do kitchen renovation is during the summer especially if you have children around. Plan around this by perhaps having your kids go on summer camp and on holiday. If this is not possible, then make such plans on a staggered basis so you can work around the schedule. Make sure that the downtime for the kitchen appliances are kept on the minimum so that you can get to use the kitchen as well. Depending on your budget, most kitchens are done on a modular basis which means that the longest time spent is tearing down your old kitchen as placing all the kitchen cabinets and tables and appliances can be quickly done because the space is premeasured already.
